North Macedonia: SIP providers and connecting a number to the PBX

We do not issue phone numbers: the venue buys a North Macedonian +389 number from a local operator and connects it to its own PBX as a trunk. The common steps — trunk modes, form fields, network and testing — are described in the overview «Connecting a provider's number to the PBX»; this page covers only the North Macedonian specifics: who sells numbers, what that operator issues and what of it goes into the admin panel.

The data on this page was collected on 9 September 2026 from operator websites and regulator (AEC) documents; links are in the «Sources» section.

In brief#

• You can buy a number with a SIP trunk in North Macedonia, and the venue needs no permit of its own: the trunk seller is the telecom operator, and you are simply its subscriber.
• The main local specific: not a single North Macedonian operator publishes trunk parameters. No host, no port, no transport, no codec list; there is no Asterisk or FreePBX guide from anyone in the country. Everything is issued under contract, the settings are e-mailed by the operator's engineer — connecting «by the instructions on the website» is not possible here.
• The first one to approach is Neotel: the only publicly named «SIP Trunk for your IP PBX» product in the country, with DDI numbers on a single line and an explicit promise to connect an IP PBX without extra equipment. The second is Gonet: the only operator that names Asterisk in writing. The third is SoftNET EU, with SIP trunking in its portfolio and its own number range.
• The main national pitfall is «trunk = our internet». At Neotel, standalone fixed IP telephony is, per its website, available only to subscribers of its fibre access; at Makedonski Telekom, multi-channel lines are delivered through its own integrated access device; at Telekabel, telephony requires an active cable connection. The first question to a sales manager is not the price but: «Is the SIP host public, does the trunk work over any internet connection to our cloud PBX with a static IP?»
• The second pitfall is the short number. The national number here is exactly 8 digits while the PBX matches a line by the last seven, so numbers from different areas may collide — details below.
• A foreign company without a local legal entity will not be sold a geographic number — neither by local operators nor by international providers. What remains are toll-free 0800 numbers (Zadarma) and universal international freephone numbers.
• In any case the trunk only works on a dedicated PBX with a static IP — how the two trunk modes work is explained in the overview.

Numbers in the country#

The country code is +389, the international dialling prefix is 00 or +, the national prefix is 0 (it is not part of the number itself). Everything in this section comes from the current AEC numbering plan (Official Gazette of RNM No. 180 of 04.08.2026).

• The national number is exactly 8 digits. The area or network code (NDC) is 1 or 2 digits, the subscriber number is 7 or 6 digits respectively.
• Geographic numbers: Skopje — code 2 and 7 subscriber digits (02 XXXXXXX, in E.164 +389 2 XXXXXXX); other areas — a two-digit code 3x/4x and 6 digits (047 XXXXXX → +389 47 XXXXXX).
• Mobile numbers — 7x plus 6 digits: 070 XXXXXX → +389 70 XXXXXX.
• Toll-free 0800 XXXXX («green number») and shared-cost 08xy XXXXX; premium — 05xy XXXXX.
• Emergency numbers: the single European 112, plus 192 police, 193 fire brigade, 194 ambulance, 195 crisis management centre, 196 roadside assistance, 197 customs, 198 tax administration, 199 interior ministry. Access to them must be free of charge with any operator.

In the admin panel, on the «Lines» tab, the number can be entered in any format: the PBX matches the last seven digits. For a Skopje number those seven digits are exactly the subscriber number, so everything lines up. More detail — «Add a number and routing».

⚠️ In areas with a two-digit code the subscriber number is shorter, so the last digit of the area code ends up inside the seven-digit tail. Bitola 047 123456 and Tetovo 044 123456 are distinguishable (7123456 and 4123456), but Veles 043 123456 and Kočani 033 123456 are not: both have the tail 3123456. If a venue has several geographic lines from different areas, add them one at a time and make a test call after each one.

Who sells a number with a SIP trunk#

The full cards below cover the three local operators that sell a SIP trunk for a third-party PBX. None of them publishes a host, a port or an authorisation mode: that is normal for this country, the credentials arrive by e-mail after the contract. The list of questions for the manager is in «What to ask the provider» — ask them before signing.

Neotel#

An alternative operator with Macedonian capital (НЕОТЕЛ АД Скопје, founded in 2004): fibre internet, fixed telephony, leased lines, a data centre. «SIP Trunk решение за фиксна телефонија» is the only publicly named product in the country for «connecting your office phone system to the outside world instead of traditional lines». The service page promises: several DDI numbers on one line, DDI numbering support, activation within a few hours, a flexible number of voice channels, choosing the displayed number on a call-by-call basis, free calls between linked locations and — literally — connecting to an IP PBX without installing additional equipment. The caveat on the same page: the service is intended for companies that have an IP PBX with SIP trunk support.

There is no public price list for the trunk — only the «Побарајте дополнителни информации» form and the business support line 02/55 11 188. For reference, the neighbouring business fixed-telephony price list: PSTN — 250 MKD/month, ISDN with 2 channels — 450 MKD/month, up to 30 channels — 5,000 MKD/month, per-second billing, prices excluding 18% VAT, a 1–2 year contract.

What to enter in the admin panel (Telephony → «Trunks and connections» → «Add provider» → the «SIP trunk (custom provider)» card):

What to set up with the provider: state in the request that the PBX is external, in the cloud, and ask for a public SIP host; agree on the number of voice channels; order a DDI range or port your existing numbers; obtain the trunk login and password, or have your static IP (the «Server» tab in the «Telephony» section) added to the whitelist; ask to enable the G.711 A-law/µ-law codecs and to open the media stream to your address in the UDP range 10000–20000; clarify in which format the number arrives in an inbound call.

Pitfalls ⚠️

• The neighbouring fixed-telephony page states that standalone fixed IP telephony is available only to subscribers of Neotel's fibre internet. If that condition also applies to the trunk, a cloud PBX will be left without signalling, and no settings will fix it. Ask before signing.
• «Activation within a few hours» refers to their own network and their own equipment; for an external PBX allow for correspondence with an engineer.
• Neither host, nor codecs, nor authorisation mode appear in any public document: everything you get arrives by e-mail. Keep that e-mail — the parameters cannot be recovered from open sources.

Gonet#

A Skopje operator with its own fibre (Go Net Communications, licensed by the AEC since 2016): business internet, dark fibre, IP transit, a data centre and IP telephony. Its «SIP Trunking» section describes exactly our scenario: «keep your existing PBX (Avaya, Cisco, Asterisk) and connect it to our SIP infrastructure», plus local, national and international DIDs, «unlimited parallel calls», failover to mobile or an alternative SIP, and detailed CDRs. The same section covers its own cloud PBX and HD Voice on the G.722 codec: this is the only public mention of a specific codec by a local operator, and our PBX supports it.

There is no public price list: «Побарај понуда», «Побарај SIP Trunking» and a ticket system on the website.

What to enter in the admin panel:

What to set up with the provider: request the trunk stating explicitly that the PBX is Asterisk in the cloud with a static IP; find out whose numbering the contract covers (we did not find a numbering holder under the Gonet trade name in the AEC registry, so the numbers are probably a partner's); agree on an IP whitelist or on a login and password; confirm the G.711/G.722 codecs; ask whether the trunk requires their own internet access — fibre is Gonet's core business.

Pitfalls ⚠️

• The website is new and marketing-driven («−60% costs», «∞ channels»); the technical part can only be verified by writing to an engineer, and the real channel limit is in the contract, not in the advertising.
• Failover «to mobile or an alternative SIP» is their redundancy scenario. Agree on who calls whom on failure so that your trunk does not end up as the second leg of someone else's design.

SoftNET EU#

The Macedonian arm of the regional SoftNET group (operating since 1996), listed in the AEC numbering holders registry as СОФТНЕТ ЕУ ДООЕЛ Скопје — meaning the company has its own numbers. Its «Гласовни услуги» section lists three products: SIP trunking («a flexible IP telephony service… no more headaches managing multiple PRIs», savings «up to 40%»), IP Centrex and On-site IP PBX. A separate VoIP page also describes the company's historical scenario — its module inside a Cisco router at the customer's premises — but states there as well that solutions using the SIP standard are supported.

There is no public price list: the «Испратете барање» form, sales +389 2 329 09 77, an office in Skopje.

What to enter in the admin panel:

What to set up with the provider: ask specifically for SIP trunking, not IP Centrex (that is their cloud PBX instead of yours); say up front that no on-premises equipment is needed and the PBX is in the cloud; agree on the numbering — theirs or porting your existing numbers; obtain the credentials or hand over the static IP; confirm the G.711/G.722 codecs and the number format in inbound calls.

Pitfalls ⚠️

• The group's website is shared across a dozen countries. Before relying on any terms, make sure the page is in the Macedonian section and the phone number is a Skopje one: prices and products differ between the group's countries.
• The company is historically a systems integrator, so the conversation easily drifts towards their router or gateway at the venue. For a cloud PBX that is an unnecessary link — decline it right away.

Operators that have no trunk for a third-party PBX#

International providers with North Macedonian numbers#

If a local operator will not provide a trunk, or the company is registered outside North Macedonia, the number can be bought from an international provider. Their trunk parameters are published, and the cards for Telnyx, Zadarma and others are already in the catalogue when adding a provider — the server address and mode are filled in automatically.

• Telnyx — geographic numbers and 0800. The paperwork for a geographic number is strict: passport or ID of the representative, a registration document of a Macedonian company, a recent letter of intent, an address in North Macedonia and proof of address no older than three months; business use only. For a toll-free number a passport, company registration and an address in any country are enough.
• Zadarma — for North Macedonia only 0800 numbers are on sale: $7 setup, $31.2 per month ($7 and $26 per month with annual payment), with 30 simultaneous lines included. There are no Skopje geographic numbers — «we will buy a Skopje number from Zadarma» will not work.
• DIDWW — the country page is open, but the coverage table only shows the universal international freephone (UIFN) row with inbound and trunking. Check the availability of local geographic DIDs in your account before promising a number to the venue.
• didlogic — Macedonian virtual numbers are ordered from the account, most are activated within 8 hours; orders that require local documents take up to 48 hours.
• CommPeak, Sonetel and similar services also offer Macedonian virtual numbers with forwarding or SIP; check the connection mode and the paperwork with each of them.
• Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking — we could not confirm Macedonian numbers in its public list, but the trunk itself (by IP or by credential list, without registration) is compatible with our PBX and is fine for outbound calls when the inbound number comes from another supplier.

A common pitfall: a number from an international provider is legally «not yours» — your contract is with a foreign operator, and reaching Macedonian emergency services through it does not work. On the other hand, connection takes hours and the trunk parameters are known in advance.

Number porting#

• The right to port is set out in the electronic communications law (art. 134). On the subscriber's request, the operator must keep the number when the subscriber changes operators: a geographic number within its own location, a non-geographic one anywhere.
• Porting between fixed and mobile networks is not guaranteed — it is not an operator obligation, and a landline number does not have to «move» to mobile.
• After the contract is terminated, the subscriber may port the number to another operator within 30 days. When changing internet access providers, the service interruption must not exceed one working day.
• How it works in practice: settle all invoices with the current operator, file a «барање за пренос на број» with the receiving one (in a shop or with a partner), after which the request goes to the donor operator. The exact timings of the procedure are set by an AEC bylaw — check them with the receiving operator rather than in old reviews.
• Register the number to the company. Market practice allows a contract with an individual, but in a dispute over number ownership and during porting everything comes down to whose name is on the contract.
• About the address and emergency calls. The operator passes call data to the «112» service, including the location the call was made from. So the address tied to the number must match the venue's real address — otherwise help will arrive at the wrong place.

Rules and paperwork#

If it does not work#

1. You were offered a «virtual PBX» or IP Centrex instead of a trunk. That is not a misconfiguration but a different product: the call is handled in the operator's cloud and never reaches your PBX. Go back to the manager with the wording «SIP trunk за нашата сопствена IP централа во облак».
2. The operator requires its own internet access or installs its own device. This is the most common local reason a trunk «will not connect»: at Neotel standalone IP telephony is tied to its fibre, at Makedonski Telekom the lines run through an access device, at Telekabel a cable connection is required. In such a design no SIP packets go outside — either the operator makes an exception and provides a public host, or you need another operator.
3. «Test connection» responds but inbound calls do not arrive. Check that the purchased numbers are routed to this very trunk, that the «Accepts calls» checkbox is enabled for the number on the «Lines» tab, and — in the IP mode — that your static IP (the «Server» tab) really is on the operator's whitelist.
4. The call connects but there is silence one or both ways. Codecs: our PBX speaks G.711 A-law/µ-law and G.722, so if only G.729 was left on the trunk there will be no audio. The second cause is that the media stream to your address is not open in the UDP range 10000–20000.
5. Several geographic lines from different areas get mixed up. The national number here is 8 digits while matching uses the last seven, so for areas with a two-digit code the last digit of the code falls into the tail: 043 123456 and 033 123456 are indistinguishable. Add such lines one at a time and make a test call after each one.
6. The provider only offers TLS or SRTP. That is not supported for trunks — ask for a normal UDP or TCP account, or choose another provider.

FAQ#

Why is no host or port published by Macedonian operators?#

Because the market is small and B2B services here are sold through a manager: not a single operator in the country publishes a server address, a port or a codec list, and there is no Asterisk or FreePBX guide from anyone. That is not a sign of a bad operator — the credentials simply arrive by e-mail after the contract. Request them before signing, together with the answer about a public SIP host.

Can I get a Macedonian number if my company is registered in another country?#

A geographic one — practically no: a local operator signs the contract with a Macedonian legal entity, and Telnyx explicitly requires a Macedonian company registration document and a confirmed local address for geographic numbers. What remains is a toll-free 0800 number (Zadarma's, for example, works with our PBX out of the box) and a universal international freephone number.

The operator offers its own cloud PBX — will that do?#

No. «A1 Виртуелна централа» and Neotel's IP Centrex are competing products, a replacement for your PBX: the call is handled in the operator's cloud, phones register there, and your PBX never appears in the design. IVR, queues, recording and the voice bot are already available in your «Telephony» section — ask for a bare SIP trunk with the numbers routed straight to it.

Do I need a static IP address?#

Yes, and you already have one: a dedicated PBX is created with a static address shown on the «Server» tab. If the operator chooses IP authorisation, that address is the only key; it is preserved when the server capacity changes, so no settings need to be updated with the operator.

How long does connection take?#

Neotel promises activation within a few hours on its own network, but for an external cloud PBX allow for weeks: correspondence with an engineer, the contract, configuration on their side. Gonet and SoftNET follow the same pattern. The fastest route is an international number: hours to arrange, but without access to Macedonian emergency services.
