Australia: SIP providers and connecting a number to the PBX
We do not issue numbers: the venue buys an Australian number from a carrier and brings it into its own PBX as a trunk. The common steps — trunk modes, form fields, network and testing — are covered in the overview "Connecting a provider number to the PBX"; this page covers only what is specific to Australia: where to get the number, what the provider issues and what of it goes into the admin panel.
The data on this page was collected on 9 September 2026 from provider documentation and Australian telecommunications industry codes; the links are in "Sources".
In brief#
- Australia is a self-service market. Six carriers publish the server address, port and codecs openly, and five of them have written a guide for Asterisk specifically. Contracts are monthly, sign-up is online, and a channel costs from 2 to 15 A$ per month. The venue needs no licence: the obligations of a communications provider are carried by whoever sells you the trunk.
- The first candidate is Crazytel. It is the only carrier in the country that published both connection schemes as separate articles: registration and IP authentication; codecs are G.711 in both flavours, tone dialling is RFC 2833, activation is instant, and there is a fallback port
25160for cases where your internet provider mangles5060. Next come SIPcity (the most detailed public parameter page in the country, both modes, G.722) and MaxoTel (the most common choice of Australian small business, but UDP only). - The main local pitfall is the eight-digit subscriber part. A line is identified by the last seven digits, while a geographic number
0X XXXX XXXXhas eight:(02) 9999 8289and(03) 9999 8289are the same for the PBX. For a "Sydney plus Melbourne" chain — a typical Australian case — this is a real scenario, so check the endings when ordering a second number. - The second one: some carriers send the trunk login instead of the number — Crazytel in registration mode, Simtex, Telecube and Siptalk. The call is accepted, but the PBX cannot pick a line by number.

A mobile phone on shift is mandatory — if the internet goes down, a cloud PBX will not place an emergency call anyway.- The venue address in the provider's account is not a formality. It goes into the national IPND database, from which the Triple Zero operator takes the caller's location. Our cloud PBX does not change that address.
- The paperwork is an Australian address and an ABN, not a passport. Local carriers effectively expect an Australian account; a foreign company will find it easier to take a number from an international provider — see the relevant section below.
Numbers in the country#
The country code is +61. Inside the country the number is dialled with a leading zero ((03) 9999 8289), an international call out is 0011 plus the country code. In international format the leading zero is dropped: (03) 9999 8289 → +61399998289 — and that is how the number is entered under "Lines".
- Geographic —
0X XXXX XXXX: an area code with a single significant digit (02— New South Wales and Canberra,03— Victoria and Tasmania,07— Queensland,08— South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia) plus eight digits of subscriber part. The national number is 10 digits, the international one is61plus another 9. - Mobile
04XX XXX XXX— 10 digits. Almost every provider in the table below sells virtual mobile numbers: in Australia this is a popular "work number" format. - Service numbers:

⚠️ Eight digits against seven. The PBX compares the last seven digits, while the Australian subscriber part is eight. Two numbers in different states with the same eight digits produce the same tail and merge into one line. When adding a second venue, check the endings of the numbers or handle both with one common routing rule.

The first seven rows are providers with published parameters; there are "What to enter in the admin panel" tables for them below. The rest issue the server address and credentials at connection time or use a different architecture altogether.
Crazytel#
A Brisbane carrier with residential and business trunks. The only one in the country that published both schemes for connecting an external PBX as separate articles — with registration and by IP, with ready-made Asterisk parameters. Activation is instant, the contract is monthly.

What to set up at the provider: buy a trunk (Residential or Business) → take the ID and password from the portal → for IP mode tell support the static IP of our PBX from the "Server" tab → point the purchased numbers at the trunk → pick an outbound number from your own.
Pitfalls ⚠️ Two different server addresses, residential and business, are easy to mix up — and then registration simply will not come up. In registration mode the incoming call carries the login, not the number (in IP mode, and in their own guide for hardware PBXs, the number arrives in full, as 61412345678) — if you have several numbers, ask at ordering time whether the number can be bound to the trunk so that it is the number that arrives. Their codecs are strictly G.711 a-law and u-law, G.722 is not declared — that is enough for us. Their port 5061 is reserved for encryption, which is not supported for trunks.

SIPcity#
An Australian carrier with its own network (connected to tier-one carriers through Equinix Fabric) and a separate SIP trunking product. It keeps the most detailed public parameter page in the country — you can configure the trunk from it without asking anyone anything.

What to set up at the provider: enable SIP Trunking in the portal → choose the scheme (registration or peering) → set the password of the SIP account → for peering give them the static IP of our PBX and enable delivery to that IP for the number → point the numbers at the trunk.
Pitfalls ⚠️ They expect the number presented to the called party in a separate SIP header (P-Asserted-Identity), which our PBX does not send by default: the "Present as" field will not work on this trunk, the line number will go out instead. If you need to choose the outbound number, write to our support. Their article about connecting third-party equipment recommends the encrypted port 5061, but the port table also confirms plain UDP 5060 — use that. Platform codecs: G.711 in both flavours, G.722, G.729, iLBC and Opus — full compatibility.

MaxoTel#
A Melbourne telephony specialist for small business: both its own cloud PBX and a trunk for someone else's. The most common choice of Australian Asterisk and 3CX installations, with its own Asterisk guide.

What to set up at the provider: register at my.maxo.com.au → create a SIP trunk and get the login and password → optionally restrict registration to our static IP (the trunk has such a setting — a second layer of protection on top of the password) → point the numbers at the trunk → pick an outbound number.
Pitfalls ⚠️ Transport is UDP only: the TCP option in the form will not work. The provider asks to be allow-listed by server name rather than by address — their IP has changed before, and there was a separate announcement about it. Codecs and the format of the incoming number are not spelled out in the public text of the guide: ask about them using the list of questions from the overview when ordering. The provider's website is behind bot protection, so it is worth verifying the parameters above with your own eyes in the portal.

Breeze Connect#
An Adelaide carrier with a strong partner focus; the platform itself runs in Sydney. It publishes its settings in one short article, and the incoming call carries the full number.

What to set up at the provider: create the trunk and the number of channels in the portal → take the credentials → point the numbers at the trunk → set the outbound number from your own.
Pitfalls ⚠️ The platform has two nodes — sip1.oci.syd.breezeconnect.com.au and sip2.oci.syd.breezeconnect.com.au — and the provider asks equipment to choose between them automatically through service DNS records. Our PBX goes to the plain host address, so there will be no automatic failover to the second node; if the first one fails, the second address is added manually as a second trunk. The recommended codec is G.711 a-law, and G.729 on slow links; ask them to keep G.711. Their 3CX template turns on media encryption — that is a requirement of the template rather than of the platform, so for a plain connection confirm with support that encryption is not mandatory: we do not support it for trunks.

Simtex#
A carrier with a geo-redundant network (sites on the west and east coasts) and trunks from 4.99 A$ per month. It keeps a recent FreePBX guide — and it is the only provider covered here that works over TCP by default.

What to set up at the provider: buy a trunk and channels → get the account number and password → ask them to confirm the port (we do not resolve service DNS records) → choose the nearest site → point the numbers at the trunk → limit the number of channels to what you actually need, which is their own security recommendation.
Pitfalls ⚠️ Transport in the form has to be switched to TCP — with UDP registration will not come up. The login is the same as the account number, and it also goes out in outbound calls, so the incoming call will most likely carry the login rather than the number: lines will not be distinguished by number. Codecs are G.711 a-law first, u-law second, which is fine.

Aatrox Communications#
An Australian carrier that has passed the interop tests of the 3CX PBX vendor; it sells unlimited and pay-as-you-go trunks with local support. It has its own Asterisk guide, but the server address is not published: it arrives by email at connection time.

Pitfalls ⚠️ The provider explicitly requires the outbound number to be presented in national format — 03xxxxxxxx, not +613…. Fill the "Present as" field on this trunk exactly that way; other people's numbers, as with every Australian carrier, are not allowed through. Codecs are not listed in the article — ask about them when ordering. You cannot plan the connection without the provider's email: there is no public server address.

A Melbourne provider: residential service, a cloud PBX and trunking. It keeps the most detailed Australian Asterisk guide — with a list of its own networks, codecs and sample dial rules.

Pitfalls ⚠️ Like SIPcity, they expect the number presented to the called party in a separate SIP header that our PBX does not send by default: the "Present as" field will not work on this trunk. In their codec list G.729 and GSM follow G.711 a-law — ask support to keep the priority on G.711, otherwise the call may fail to negotiate. They do not have G.711 u-law at all, but a-law is enough.

Providers whose parameters come from support#
Ozetel, VoIPLine Telecom, Aussie Broadband, Telecube, Siptalk, Vonex and Vocus
These carriers do have a trunk for your own PBX, but the server address, login and password are issued by email or in the portal after the contract is signed: you cannot pre-configure the trunk from this page. What to ask the account manager — "What to ask the provider".
- Ozetel. A Sydney provider with the cheapest public trunk in this selection: 2 A$ per month for one channel, 15 A$ for ten, 60 A$ for fifty; incoming calls are free, and local and national calls are charged per call rather than per minute. It works by IP only, with no registration at all: clear the "Register with the provider" checkbox in the trunk form and give the provider the static IP of our PBX from the "Server" tab. Codecs are stated explicitly — G.711, G.722 and G.729. The server address and port are not published and are issued at connection: request them by email before creating the trunk. - VoIPLine Telecom. An Australian cloud PBX with a separate trunking product. Their trunk is an object inside their own PBX: it has to be created in SIP registration mode, linked to the inbound number object and then applied with a separate configuration button, otherwise incoming calls will not flow. The server address is specific to the account (of the form
sipmreg.au.voipcloud.online), and the port is non-standard —7060; a forgotten port looks like "registration silently fails". The provider asks you to use the server name rather than the address: they load-balance on their side. Channels are a paid pool that still has to be distributed across trunks. - Aussie Broadband. A large internet provider, and since 2024 the owner of the wholesale carrier Symbio. A logical choice when the venue's internet is already theirs, but outbound calls through our PBX do not work on this trunk today: their server expects a special short domain string in the call instead of the server address and rejects everything else. As a receiver of incoming calls the trunk is fine. The eight-digit login and the password are not shown in the portal — you have to call support for them; their outbound number is also set equal to the login rather than to the number.
- Telecube. The trunk exists, the mode is registration (IP authentication is also available on request), the server address is
sip.telecube.com.au, but the provider keeps no public guide: verify the parameters with support. The incoming call carries the login, and the provider puts the number into a proprietary service header that our PBX does not read — so routing by line will not work on this trunk. - Siptalk. A Brisbane cloud PBX. The connection is arranged not as a trunk but as an extension of their PBX: you create a "device extension" in the portal and enter its login and password on our side. The server address is of the form
sipNN.siptalk.com.au, where the site number is specific to the account — it is shown on the management page of the account and must not be guessed. A consequence of that model: part of the logic (auto attendant, queues) stays on their side, and the incoming call carries the extension login. Connectivity check — their echo test99299. - Vonex and Vocus. Vonex is a cloud PBX provider that took over the MyNetFone retail base in 2021: according to their help centre a trunk "for customers with their own PBX" does exist, but the parameters are not published, and the help article itself did not open on 9 September 2026 because of an expired site certificate. Vocus is a wholesale and corporate carrier, certified by the 3CX PBX vendor only for its "standard" trunks; its trunk number is entered in national format (
0285203570). For both, request the parameters from support.
Carriers that will not work with our PBX#
Telstra, Optus, Symbio, Internode NodePhone — why, and what to do instead
- Telstra (Business SIP and SIP Connect). The country's largest carrier does have a SIP trunk, but it terminates on their own box at the venue's premises, and only accredited PBXs are allowed to connect to it. The signalling comes from their border servers to the static address of that box rather than to an arbitrary host on the internet, and it requires port forwarding and quality-of-service settings on the router. Such a trunk will not see our cloud PBX. For a venue on Business SIP we suggest porting the number to any provider from the list above, or keeping a local gateway on the premises.
- Optus (Evolve Voice). A corporate trunk for an on-premises PBX: it needs no media device, but it is delivered over the private Optus Evolve network rather than the public internet, and is sold together with it. It will not reach our PBX in the cloud.
- Symbio and Internode NodePhone. Symbio (formerly MyNetFone and MNF Group) is a wholesale carrier, part of Aussie Broadband since February 2024: the trunk is corporate, there are no public parameters, and the retail path to the same network today runs through Aussie Broadband. NodePhone was a historical option beloved by Australian enthusiasts: the product was withdrawn together with the Internode brand, and there are no new connections.
International providers with Australian numbers#
Australian numbers are sold by all the large international services — Telnyx, Twilio, DIDWW, Plivo, Bandwidth, Vonage, Sinch, didlogic, VoIP.ms, Zadarma and others. The Telnyx, Twilio and Zadarma cards are already in the catalogue when adding a provider: the server address and mode are filled in for you.
- For a foreign company this is usually the only route. Local carriers effectively expect an Australian account, an ABN and a service address, while international providers accept the customer's documents and address through their regulatory bundle.
- Document checks are address-based and mandatory. At Twilio, Australian numbers are issued through a regulatory bundle with an address in Australia, and the requirements differ for local, mobile and toll-free numbers and for a company versus an individual. The reason is the same for everyone: the address goes into the IPND database, from which Triple Zero takes the location.
- Emergency
000is not a matter of "yes or no" but of "how it is arranged". Twilio routes emergency calls by the registered address of the number, Telnyx documents000support and work with the IPND address, and some smaller number aggregators have limited000support. Having bought a number from an international provider, still check that emergency calls work and that the address is correct. - Point of presence. Telnyx and VoIP.ms keep a node in Sydney; Sinch's Australian edge is
apse2.vp.sip.sinch.com. A provider without an Australian node adds delay you can hear in the dining room. - Modes. Telnyx — registration or a connection by server name; DIDWW — a static endpoint or registration; Twilio and Plivo — by IP only, they have no registration; Zadarma — registration on
sip.zadarma.com.
Number porting#
- Both geographic and mobile numbers can be ported; the procedure is set by the industry number portability code maintained by the Australian Telecommunications Alliance. The application is submitted by the gaining carrier — you do not need to file anything with the losing one.
- Timings. A simple port of a single geographic number — 80 % of requests within 8 business days and 98 % within 15; complex cases (a block of numbers, attached services) — 15 to 20 business days. Check the exact timing in the contract of the specific carrier.
- Do not terminate the contract with the previous carrier before the port completes — the number will be returned to the pool, and you will not get it back.
- Typical reasons for rejection: the account name and address do not match the records of the losing carrier, the number is part of a block (a single number cannot be pulled out of a group), or additional services are attached to the number.
1300and1800are ported through a separate mechanism, not ordinary portability, and it usually takes longer.- After the port, check the IPND address with the new carrier: if it has not been updated, Triple Zero will see the old address.
Rules and documents#
Licences, caller ID, emergency calls, the IPND address database, call recording
- The venue needs no permit. There is no separate licence for internet telephony in Australia: communications are sold by whoever gives you the trunk, and it is they who carry the obligations towards the ACMA regulator. Numbering is allocated by the ACMA under the 2025 national numbering plan, and the end customer receives the number from a carrier.
- You may only present your own numbers. Industry code C661:2022 obliges carriers not to carry calls in which the caller has presented a number they hold no rights to. The practice is the same everywhere: almost every Australian provider repeats this in its own documentation.
- Service numbers are explicitly banned from caller ID. The same code prohibits sending
13,1300,1800and1900as the calling number. The common wish to "show our 1300" breaks the industry code, and the carrier is obliged to reject such calls. Put the venue's landline or mobile number into the "Present as" field. - Emergency calls are
000,112and106. They cannot be dialled through our PBX: the numbers are shorter than four digits, while outbound rules work from four. This is a deliberate limitation — an emergency call must not depend on an internet link and a cloud PBX. Keep a mobile phone on shift. - The IPND is an Australian feature that Europe does not have. The provider of the number is obliged to pass the subscriber's name and address into the national database, and for portable telephony services to flag the address as "alternate" and give a contact name and phone, because the service may physically be somewhere other than the registered address. That is exactly where the Triple Zero operator takes the address from when the caller cannot state it. Moving the venue without updating the IPND means the ambulance arrives at the old address.
- Call recording. There is no separate "telephony" permission — the federal privacy act and the state surveillance-device laws apply. The practice is simple: enable the spoken recording notice in the location settings.
If it does not work#
- Registration is up, calls arrive, but the line is not identified. The provider sends the login instead of the number — this is how Crazytel in registration mode, Simtex, Telecube and Siptalk work. The call is still handled; to tell numbers apart, ask the provider about number delivery or add a second trunk with a carrier that sends the full number.
- A call to the second number follows the scenario of the first one. The last seven digits coincide: Australian numbers have an eight-digit subscriber part. Separate the numbers by their endings when ordering, or handle both with one common routing rule.
- Simtex: registration does not come up. Their transport is TCP, not UDP, and the port is non-standard. Switch the transport in the trunk form and confirm the port with support — our PBX does not use the service DNS records they hand it out through.
- VoIPLine: registration silently fails. The non-standard port
7060has been forgotten. Check both that and the fact that in their PBX the trunk object is linked to the inbound number object and the configuration has been applied with the separate button. - Aussie Broadband: incoming calls work, outbound ones are rejected. Their server expects a special short domain string in the outbound call, while the PBX substitutes the server address. For now use this trunk as a receiver of incoming calls, and add a trunk with another provider for outbound ones.
- "Present as" is ignored at SIPcity and Australian Phone Company. Both take the presentation number from a separate SIP header that the PBX does not send by default: the line number will go out. If you need to choose the outbound number, write to our support.
- Outbound calls are rejected at Aatrox. The provider requires the national number format in caller ID (
03xxxxxxxx) and does not accept the international one with a plus. - One-way audio in IP mode (Ozetel, SIPcity peering). The static IP of our PBX has not been added to the provider's allow list. Take the address from the "Server" tab and send it to the provider.

FAQ#
Can I get an Australian number if the company is not registered in Australia?#
With local carriers — usually not: in practice they expect an Australian account, an ABN and an Australian service address that will go into the IPND database. A foreign company will find it easier to buy an Australian number from an international provider: they accept the customer's documents and address through a regulatory bundle, although the address will still have to be confirmed.
Registration or IP authentication — which should I choose?#
Registration, if the provider supports it: it does not depend on allow lists. Choose IP mode when the provider only works that way (Ozetel) or when you would rather not store the trunk password — then a dedicated PBX with a static address is required, and it has one. Both modes are openly supported by Crazytel and SIPcity.
The provider sent a login instead of the number — is that a fault?#
No, that is how some Australian carriers work. The call is accepted and goes into routing as "a call from this provider", you simply cannot pick a line by number. With a single number this goes unnoticed; if there are several numbers, ask the provider whether number delivery can be enabled, or take a trunk with someone who sends the full number: Australian Phone Company, Breeze Connect, Aatrox, SIPcity.
How long does connection take?#
At Crazytel, SIPcity and MaxoTel — the day you apply: sign-up is online and credentials are issued immediately. Aatrox, Simtex and Australian Phone Company — from hours to a day. Ozetel, VoIPLine and Aussie Broadband — days, with an exchange of emails. Porting an existing number takes 8 to 15 business days. In other words, getting a venue's telephony up in a day is realistic if the number is new.
How do I dial 000 through the PBX?#
You cannot: emergency numbers are shorter than four digits, while outbound rules work from four. Keep a mobile phone on shift — if the internet goes down, a cloud PBX will not place an emergency call anyway. And check that the venue address in the provider's account is correct: that is exactly what goes into the IPND database, from which the Triple Zero operator takes the location.
Can I present our 1300 number on outbound calls?#
No. The industry code prohibits sending 13, 1300, 1800 and 1900 as the calling number, and the carrier is obliged to reject such calls. Present the venue's landline or mobile number — and only one that is attached to your account with the provider.
