Line number: which of your numbers was called

What a line number is#

A business often has several numbers on one provider wire (SIP trunk): "bookings" and "delivery", the numbers of two locations, a toll-free and a local number. The line number is the one of your numbers the customer called. It is not the caller's number: the customer's number does not change, and call-backs go to it.

What depends on the line number How
Route the call follows this number's route: who to ring, a menu, voicemail
Label on the phone screen staff see which number is being called before they answer
Language and ringtone taken from the number that was called
Log and apps the line number is saved with the call and shown in the log, on the live board and in Cenaly Phone

If the provider passes the number somewhere other than where the PBX looks for it, all numbers of the trunk look the same to the PBX: a call to "delivery" goes wherever a call to "bookings" goes. This article explains how to set this up and check it.

What you need to get started#

What Why
The location's dedicated PBX with updated firmware the update is under "Server" → update the PBX; without it the windows say "not available on this PBX"
A provider trunk (SIP trunk) with its numbers on the "Lines" tab the PBX matches the incoming number against this trunk's lines — connecting a provider's number
At least one incoming call on the trunk the window uses it to suggest where the provider passes the number
Access to the "Telephony" section all settings are in the provider window: Telephony → "Phone providers"
For a number's own route — the "as trunk / own" route model the owner turns it on, see step 4

How the PBX identifies the line number#

The number is identified once, as the call comes in, by the "trunk + number" pair:

  1. The PBX takes the number from the place set for the trunk (Request-URI by default, as it always was).
  2. It normalises it to international format (+7…). A number in the 8… form or without the area code is recognised too.
  3. It matches it against the line numbers of this trunk.
Result Where the call goes
The number is recognised along this number's route
A number arrived, but the trunk has no such line "number not recognised" — along the trunk's route
The candidates contradict each other "number not recognised" — along the trunk's route
The trunk has one line and the provider did not pass a number the call belongs to that single line

An unrecognised call never goes as "the trunk's first number" — only along the trunk's own route.

Step 1. See what the provider sends#

  1. Open "Calls" → the PBX call log → the card of an incoming call on the trunk you need.
  2. Go to the "SIP" tab (the call has the "SIP packets available" badge).
  3. At the top is "Key facts from the headers": which number was called. For MANGO the numbers come from Diversion — its Request-URI and To carry only the account name, for example "inbound".
  4. Below are the packets. Click INVITE: the headers open as a "name · value · what it means" table.
  5. Find where your number is: Request-URI, To, P-Called-Party-ID, Diversion (first or last) or the provider's own header. Choose that place for the trunk in step 2.

Step 2. Choose where to take the number from#

The provider window: Telephony → "Phone providers" → the provider window → "Settings" tab → "Where the provider puts the line number" block, field "Line number is in".

Option When to choose it
"Automatic — by provider profile" the provider is among the profiles (below)
"Request-URI (usual)" the number comes in the request address — true for most; this is the default
"To header" the provider puts the account login in the Request-URI and the number in To
"P-Called-Party-ID" the number comes in this header
"Diversion — top" the provider forwards the call to your account, the dialled line is in the first Diversion (MANGO OFFICE virtual PBX)
"Diversion — bottom" the provider stacks forwarding steps on top of the dialled number
"Own header" the number is in the provider's own header; its name goes in the "Header name" field

"Header name" — Latin letters, digits, "-" and "_", starting with a letter (for Zadarma, for example, CALLED_DID). Service headers such as To, Via, Diversion and X-Cenaly-… are not accepted.

"Provider profile" for the "Automatic" option:

Profile Where it looks for the number, in order
"Standard" Request-URI if it holds a number → P-Called-Party-ID → top Diversion → To
"MANGO OFFICE (VPBX)" top Diversion → Request-URI. Only for the trunk of shared numbers: personal accounts also carry the shared number in Diversion
"Zadarma" CALLED_DID → Request-URI

The hint in the window. If the trunk has an incoming call with a SIP capture, the window looks at the last one itself:

  • "The number +7… (name) is found in Diversion — top. Choose it?" — the "Choose" button sets that place;
  • "as set now" — the number is already where the setting points;
  • "Only account logins were in the packet, no line number" — the provider did not pass the number at all.

A number that is already a line of another trunk of the location is not suggested.

What is known about providers#

The information comes from the provider catalogue and the providers' own documentation; if your case is missing or does not match, look at the "SIP" tab of the first incoming call (step 1).

Provider / connection mode Where the line number is What to choose
MANGO OFFICE, virtual-PBX SIP account for shared numbers (registration at <domain>.mangosip.ru) Request-URI and To hold the account login, the number is in the top Diversion (checked on live calls) "Automatic" + the "MANGO OFFICE (VPBX)" profile
MANGO OFFICE, personal staff accounts Diversion holds the shared line's number do not switch, keep Request-URI
MANGO OFFICE, external SIP Trunk by IP MANGO's guide does not say look at the "SIP" tab of the first incoming call
Zadarma and Novofon, SIP number with registration Request-URI holds the SIP number (login), the dialled number is in CALLED_DID (per the provider's docs) "Automatic" + the "Zadarma" profile, or "Own header" CALLED_DID
Gravitel, client SIP trunk Request-URI holds the short subscriber number, the dialled number is in To (per Gravitel's Asterisk guide) "To header"
SIPNET the number is in the second Remote-Party-Id, which the trunk does not read one SIP ID per number
Zadarma and Novofon, SIP URI mode (<number>@<your PBX IP>) in the Request-URI Request-URI
Telphin in the Request-URI as 7XXXXXXXXXX (per Telphin's guide) Request-URI
Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking, no user in the Origination URI the Request-URI holds the dialled number (+E.164) Request-URI
Twilio, a user set in the Origination URI the user is the same for all numbers of the trunk numbers cannot be told apart
Telnyx the format of the incoming number (DNIS) is chosen in the connection settings: +E.164 / E.164 / national / SIP Username a number format + Request-URI
DIDWW, registration with "Use DID in R-URI" ticked — in the Request-URI tick it + Request-URI
MTT, UIS, MTS (virtual PBX / auto attendant) per their guides the Request-URI holds the account login or a service name; where the number is is not described look at the "SIP" tab

Step 3. Sort out new numbers#

A number the provider sent a call to, but which is not among the trunk's lines, can be found by the PBX itself. The trunk's "New numbers" block:

Mode What happens
"Add right away" (default) a new number of this trunk becomes an "incoming only" line with the trunk's route; the "Lines" tab marks it "Detected "
"Suggest" the PBX only lists new numbers under "Lines"; you decide whether to add them
"Do not look for" new numbers are not looked for

An "incoming only" number takes part in incoming calls only: it is not used for outgoing calls, the caller ID, registration or number checks.

Not discovered: the account login, numbers shorter than 6 digits and a number already added on another trunk of the location.

The "Lines" tab#

The "Lines" tab of the provider window is a "Number · Name · Last incoming · Route" table with the "incoming only", "Detected " and "off" marks.

Where Actions
A discovered number in the table "Confirm", "Name", "Set up route", "Ignore"
The "Seen by the PBX, not added" block — suggestions and matches with reference numbers "Add number", "Use for incoming", "Ignore"
Ignored numbers a collapsed list

"Ignore" on a number that is already added removes it from the lines, and the PBX will not add it again. The same marks show in the trunk's list of numbers on the "Phone providers" tab, under the number's row.

Step 4. Set the number's route#

The "Number route" window opens from the "Lines" tab and from the "⋯" menu of a number's row:

  • "As the trunk: <where the trunk's calls go>" — the number has no rules of its own (its own rules are turned off; one click brings them back);
  • "Own route" — the action is chosen right there: an employee, a ring group, a voice menu, voicemail, the AI secretary, an external number, hang up.

"Call path now" shows which rules will fire: an override, the number's own rule, a trunk rule or a location rule. The order of checks:

  1. shared override rules;
  2. the number's own rules;
  3. the trunk's rules;
  4. the location's shared rules;
  5. the location mode.

An own route is available only in the "as trunk / own" route model. The owner turns it on in the "Route model “as trunk / own”" block of the same window after a preview: how many rules will change and what needs to be set by hand. It can be rolled back there too. Complex distribution (round-robin, a greeting with text) is edited under "Incoming call path".

Where the line number is shown#

Where What you see
The log and the call card "Called number:
An unrecognised call in the log " · (this number is not among your lines)" or "line number not passed · "
Live board the line's label and number
Cenaly Phone and the web phone "Line:
Desk phones as before: the "Label on the phone screen" from the number's row menu

Limitations#

  • Works only on a dedicated PBX after the firmware update. Without it: the provider window says "Not available on this PBX — update the PBX firmware" (calls are identified by the Request-URI), the new-numbers block says "This PBX does not report new numbers yet — update the PBX firmware", the route window says "A number's own route is not available on this PBX".
  • If the provider passes the line number in no header at all, numbers of one trunk cannot be told apart.
  • Up to 100 discovered numbers per trunk. The PBX reports a new number at most once every 10 minutes per number and at most 10 new numbers an hour per trunk.
  • A number's own route — only in the "as trunk / own" route model.
  • An "incoming only" number cannot be used for outgoing calls, the caller ID, registration or number checks.

Troubleshooting#

What you see Why What to do
All calls of a trunk follow one route, the log says "this number is not among the lines" the number is taken from the wrong place, or it is not among the lines step 1 — find the number on the "SIP" tab, step 2 — choose that place; check the number is added under "Lines"
The log says "line number not passed · " the provider did not send the number in the selected place look at the "SIP" tab; if the number is nowhere — a separate account or trunk per number
The hint "Only account logins were in the packet, no line number" the provider does not pass the number same: a separate account or trunk per number
After switching a MANGO staff member's personal account to Diversion or the "MANGO OFFICE (VPBX)" profile, its calls show "this number is not among your lines" and go the trunk route personal accounts carry the shared line's number in Diversion, not their own go back to Request-URI: the "MANGO OFFICE (VPBX)" profile is only for the trunk of shared numbers
A new number did not appear under "Lines" "Do not look for" mode, the 100-number limit, fewer than 6 digits, or already added on another trunk check the "New numbers" block and the number's row on other trunks
The "SIP" tab has no packets the capture is not ready yet, or the call is old wait 1–2 minutes or click "Request SIP packets from the PBX archive" (72 h)
"Not available on this PBX" old firmware "Server" → update the PBX

FAQ#

Does the caller's number change too?#

No. The line number is your number that was called. The customer's number stays the same, and call-backs go to it.

Why doesn't an unrecognised call go as "the trunk's first number"?#

So that a call to one number is not routed by mistake as another one. An unrecognised call follows the trunk's route.

A new number was added by itself — will it make outgoing calls?#

No. A discovered number is added as an "incoming only" line: incoming calls only, the trunk's route.

Can one number have its own menu while the others share one?#

Yes: "Own route" on that number, "As the trunk" on the others. This needs the "as trunk / own" route model.
