15 or 36-Month Fiscal Drive: How to Choose Without Overpaying
You bought a 36-month fiscal drive to deal with replacements less often — and it "died" eight months later with a memory overflow error, forcing an unplanned search for funds for a new one. Or vice versa: installed a 15-month fiscal drive where the law requires 36, and got rejected during registration. Choosing a fiscal drive depends on your business activity and tax system, not on picking "the most expensive and longest-lasting" option.
1. Who is Required to Use 36 Months, and Who May Choose 15#
| Situation | Minimum | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Services (not goods trade), any tax regime | 36 months | Full-service cafes, hair salons, auto repair shops |
| STS, Patent, UAT — trade of non-excisable goods | 36 months | Special tax regimes imply less frequent replacement |
| General tax system — retail and wholesale trade | 15 months | The general system does not grant the right to use FN-36 when trading goods |
| Excisable goods (alcohol, tobacco, etc.) | 15 months | Regardless of the tax system |
| Seasonal or mobile trade | 15 months | Fairs, temporary outlets, mobile trade |
| Offline mode (without permanent internet) | 15 months | The FN provider usually does not offer a 36-month option |
| Payment agents and sub-agents | 15 months | Accepting payments in favor of third parties |
"Required 36" is a baseline minimum, not a prohibition against choosing a shorter period: you can always use FN-15, you will simply have to replace it more frequently.
2. Matrix: What to Install in Your Situation#
| Your Activity | What to Install |
|---|---|
| Cafe, restaurant, catering services on STS | FN-36 |
| Grocery store on GTS | FN-15 |
| Store on STS, without excisable goods | FN-36 |
| Alcohol sales (any taxation system) | FN-15 |
| Courier, mobile trade, autonomous mode | FN-15 |
| Online store with online payment, services | FN-36 (if not excisable and not GTS goods) |
| Weekend market, seasonal location | FN-15 |
If you are unsure which category you belong to, check with your OFD or cash register dealer: an incorrectly chosen FN is a common reason for registration rejection (see the article on cash register registration).
3. Why FN-36 "Expires" Ahead of Schedule#
FN has two independent limitations: the calendar validity period and the memory capacity for fiscal documents. The longer the declared validity, the less memory is allocated for activity per unit of time — FN-36 is designed for an average rather than peak receipt flow. With high foot traffic and a large number of items per receipt, the archive fills up long before the calendar expiration date — the POS terminal gets locked due to memory overflow.
Example. A grocery store using FN-36 (entitled to it under the Simplified Taxation System) issues about 500 receipts per day with 12–15 items each. The archive filled up in about 13 months instead of 36 — they had to urgently purchase a new FN, even though the formal expiration date was still two years away. Being eligible for 36 months does not guarantee an actual 36-month lifespan under a high load — calculate the expected number of receipts and items, not just the formal requirement under 54-FZ.
4. FN-M and FFD 1.2 — Mandatory for Product Marking#
If you sell marked goods (shoes, clothing, certain food products, tobacco, and other "Chestny ZNAK" categories), a standard FN will not work — you need the FN-M version with expanded memory for marking code attributes (tag 1162 and related data). FN-M always works in tandem with POS firmware supporting FFD 1.2 — older formats do not support the full set of marking attributes. Before launching sales of marked goods, check three things at once: the FN version ("M"), the POS firmware (FFD 1.2), and whether the hardware model actually supports this combination — not all older POS terminals can be updated via software.
5. Cost of Ownership#
| Metric | FN-15 | FN-36 |
|---|---|---|
| Drive price | lower per unit | higher per unit |
| Replacement frequency | ~15 months | ~36 months under moderate load |
| Monthly cost of ownership | price ÷ 15 | price ÷ 36 |
| Risk of early replacement due to load | lower | higher with high receipt volume |
Prices from different manufacturers vary significantly — check the current price list with your dealer or in your OFD account dashboard. If your business activities strictly require FN-15 (retail under the general tax regime, alcohol sales, seasonal trade), comparing economics with FN-36 is pointless, as there is no choice.
6. How to do this in Cenaly#
Cenaly does not sell fiscal drives and does not decide for you which storage unit is legally required — this depends on your tax system and type of business activity; check with your accountant or OFD. However, the platform helps you stay in control of the load:
- the POS → Receipts log shows the actual number of receipts and items in them — estimate the expected load before purchasing a new fiscal drive;
- the Hardware section displays the POS status (ATOL, SHTRIH-M, Pirit, Mercury via Cenaly Hardware Bridge) — warnings about the upcoming expiration of the fiscal drive are visible there as well;
- for track-and-trace goods, the Cenaly POS screen works in conjunction with the cash register on FFD 1.2 — make sure that the FN-M is installed and the firmware is updated before starting sales.
7. Frequently Asked Questions#
Can I install FN-36 on a POS required to use FN-15? No: for excisable goods, OSN retail, seasonal trade, and offline mode, registration with FN-36 will fail — the FNS checks compliance during registration.
Mixed retail — regular goods and alcohol. Which FN should I install? If at least part of your product range includes excisable goods, use the minimum validity period, FN-15, even if the rest of your business activity formally allows 36 months.
FN-M is more expensive — can I use a standard FN if I have few marked/trackable goods? No: the requirement for FN-M and FFD 1.2 does not depend on the share of trackable goods in your turnover — a single such item in your product range is enough.
How do I find out the memory capacity of a specific FN model before purchasing? Ask your dealer for the fiscal storage data sheet — it specifies the estimated volume of documents per day; compare this figure with your actual daily receipt count for high-traffic locations.
